UNMASK NEW MERCH TO CELEBRATE A CENTURY OF ZORRO
Long before Iron Man, Captain America, Batman, or Superman, a different avenger debuted in pop culture: Zorro.
Writer Johnston McCulley first introduced this famous masked vigilante in 1919, and he’s gone on to inspire 10 movies, 12 television series, 75 stage productions, and thousands of publications.
To celebrate Zorro’s 100th anniversary, there are tons of new Zorro products and experiences coming our way. To start, American Mythology will publish two new monthly series of Zorro comics, available in English for the first time. The first miniseries, Zorro: Swords of Hell, will debut this August in Trade Paperback. The second miniseries, Zorro: Sacrilege, has a more supernatural twist and debuts this spring. Two more miniseries, Zorro: Rise of the Old Gods and Zorro: Galleon of the Dead, will follow through the fall.
Fans can channel their inner Zorro with a new The Sword of Zorro escape-the-room experience from Mystery Escape Room. For now, the room is in test previews in Salt Lake City, with plans for a national rollout.
In June, Gemstone will feature Zorro on the cover of its annual Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. On June 10, Chillicothe, Illinois — Johnston McCulley’s birthplace — will host “Zorro Fest,” featuring a Zorro-themed parade and other activities.
Throughout the rest of the year, multiple companies will roll out Zorro-themed consumer products. Smoky Mountain Knife Works will introduce a 100th Anniversary Bowie by Rough Ryder, featuring a 440 stainless steel blade decorated with detailed Zorro graphics, a black wood “Zorro” engraved handle, and a display stand. The company also plans to release Zorro Zippo lighters. Both will be available exclusively at smkw.com.
American Mythology will publish an art book titled The Mark of Zorro: 100 Years of the Masked Avenger and a set of Zorro trading cards. Both products, coming this October, feature art from Zorro’s adventures in movies, TV, and comics.
Other upcoming Zorro products include new costumes from Rubie’s; The Zorro Dice Game from Overworld Games; and Zorro tequila, cigars, and barware from Silver Screen Bottling.
In December, Gallant Knight Games will introduce Zorro: The Roleplaying Game. This new tabletop role-playing game is set in Alta, California, and uses the new edition of West End Games’ D6 2nd Edition system. Gallant Knight will be creating a full-color, hardcover core rulebook with more than 200 pages; a faux-leather collector’s edition; metal Hero Point Tokens emblazoned with the iconic Zorro “Z;” and a collector’s set of Zorro dice, including a custom Zorro Wild Die.
The celebration of Zorro’s first century is set to continue into next year, so be on the lookout for even more masked crusader merch!
