Angel Studios’ Wingfeather Saga gets season three
EXCLUSIVE: The crowdfunded series has raised more than US$8.2 million since its launch, and is primed for growth with licensing and a video game in the works.
This 2D/CG toon (13 x 25 minutes) aimed at kids ages eight to 12 is based on a four-title Penguin Random House book series by Andrew Peterson that has sold more than 1.5 million copies in the US alone. Season three, due out in 2025, will continue the fantasy-led story of a family on a journey to find their place in the world and battling evil villains along the way.
Despite the success of the original source material, getting the series off the ground required some creative financing. The team behind the show turned to the web in 2016 and has since raised more than US$8.2 million in crowdfunding from 10,000-plus investors. Wingfeather‘s producers are now on much steadier ground, having “received a full funding commitment,” according to an Angel Studios spokesperson.
The brand is also poised for major ancillary growth this year. Angel Studios is planning to unveil a partnership with a video game developer in the coming weeks, and Licensing Works! also signed on as the IP’s US licensing agent in April.
All told, the team plans to make seven seasons of The Wingfeather Saga. Season two launched in April and is available in the US on platforms including Roku, Apple TV, Prime Video and Angel’s own AVOD platform.
The IP has come a long way since Shining Isle offered books, apparel and trading cards to investors as part of its initial crowdfunding campaign, which raised more than US$250,000 in 2016 for the show’s production. A branded YouTube channel has attracted more than 40,000 subscribers, and Shining Isle launched a Roblox game called Wingfeather Saga: Adventures in Glipwood in January 2023.
